30 Days, 50,000 Words….. Reaching for the Stars Saturday, Oct 24 2015

Last year I discovered a website where once a year during the month of November writers are challenged to create a 50,000+ word novel in 30 days.  Unfortunately, it was mid November, too late for me to truly participate while working a 9-5 and raising a high schooler so I wait and before I know it, November is here. During the past 11 months I completed my first book and self published it, started two other writing projects that have stalled and changed jobs. The high schooler is now a senior and I see our lives already changing.

The good news is I have a story that I have been toying with since completing my last one.  The goal is not only to complete the story in 30 days, but to complete my other projects that have stalled.  I plan to go into 2016 with at least two completed projects an at least two others started.  It will take some discipline and with the encouragement from friends and family, I am confident I will succeed.

Kayla’s Star is the story of a young widower who throws herself into her children, work and volunteer efforts.   Dating is a concept she does not see in her future. She never saw it coming when the new volunteer turned up as her new trainee at the nonprofit she gives her time to.  Her rival volunteer immediately latches onto the new guy but he only has eyes for Kayla. As her resolve weakens, his true identity threatens their future.

I look forward to sharing this story as I develop the characters and story.

Dream Maker Saturday, Apr 27 2013

We all have dreams of what we want our lives to be.  From childhood to college to the realities of life, we continue to dream about what we want.  Growing up, I wanted to be an actress and then when that dream faded into another, it was to become a fashion store owner.  In my early 20s, that dream faded to become an author.  Becoming an author was the one dream that stuck.  Over 25 years later, I am finally realizing that dream.  I am working on a fiction piece currently titled Moments in Time.  The goal is to finish it by mid to late May and be ready for distribution by mid June.

I am very excited to share a small sample of my work.  This is pre-edited so forgive my formatting:

The sudden scream from just behind them caught Matthew’s ear. He turned his head to the left toward the sound and oncoming traffic lanes just in time to see the car coming with seemingly no intent to stop. Instinctively, he grabbed Courtney, who was so engaged in her story that she was not aware of the burst of activity around her, and pushed her forward in an attempt to get her out of the way… then darkness.

When he woke up, it was the next morning and he was in the hospital with a broken left arm and IVs protruding from his good arm. Jeremy was there calling for the nurse when he saw Matthew turning is head with eyes first searching for familiarity and then realization. It took Matthew a moment to remember what happened.

As his memory came back, he felt immense panic. “Where is Courtney?” He could feel his mouth moving but no sound was coming out just some strange sound he could not identify. Why did Jeremy not hear him? Just as he was becoming agitated, the nurse walked in, helped him sit up and gave him some water which he drank through a straw. He could feel the cotton in his throat start to dissipate. Once he got his voice back he started to ask again, Jeremy, sensing his panic, raised his hand to stop him.

“Courtney survived but she is still in critical condition,” Jeremy immediately told him.

I will be self publishing this book and have started an Indiegogo campaign to help raise funds and raise awareness for the project and a worthy non-profit.  Check it out, pre-order your book, share with others – http://igg.me/p/396357/x/649489.
